Previous Experience

Advocate Elizabeth "Lizzy" Baloyi-Mere has established a distinguished legal career since her admission as an Advocate in 2009. She has appeared in South Africa’s highest courts, including the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court of Appeal, and High Courts across eight provinces. Her judicial expertise was further honed as an Acting Judge in the Gauteng and Free State High Courts. Currently, she serves as a Commissioner in the Magistrates Commission, contributing to the Ethics Committee to promote accountability and ethical practices. A committed advocate for transformation in the legal profession, Adv. Baloyi-Mere has held leadership roles such as Deputy Chairperson of Advocates for Transformation (AFT) and Chairperson of PABASA, a bar association driving diversity and inclusivity. She mentors junior practitioners, particularly black female advocates, and has served on the Council of the Pretoria Society of Advocates. Her contributions extend to policy development, where she played a key role in drafting rules for the Legal Practice Council (LPC) as a member of the National Forum. She later served on the LPC Council, contributing to the Rules and Regulations and Education Committees. Additionally, she is a member of the Legal Sector Charter Council (LSCC) and a board member of the Legal Practitioners Development Fund (LPDF), supporting the sector’s transformation and growth.

Education

Prior to her legal career, Adv. Baloyi-Mere was a teacher and co-founded the North West Teachers Union (1988–2008), showcasing her dedication to labour relations and social activism. Advocate Baloyi-Mere holds an LLB degree from the University of South Africa (UNISA), which provided the foundation for her illustrious legal career.
